Welcome to the latest entry in my "Year in the Woods" series, where I document all the native plants I can find in our woods in one year.
It seems to be legume season. We'll start with Spurred Butterfly Pea, Centrosema virginianum.
You might not recognize this next flower, but if you do any hiking you know the seeds. They are small and triangular and stick to your clothes. This is Beggar's Ticks, Desmodium nudiflorum (another legume).
This little pea has me stumped. I think it may be non-native.
Lespedeza procumbens, yet another legume.
Stumped yet again.
This is Heal-All (Prunella vulgaris), and there seems to be some debate over whether it is native or introduced.
Don't know this one either.
I think this gives me a pretty good excuse to order a couple new ID books!
[UPDATE: This is some type of wild lettuce, possibly Lactuca canadensis]
