This is the materials list for the kayak storage shed/rack I built.
All lumber is pressure treated. I used the following:
- 2 sheets of 1/2 inch plywood
- 4 ten-foot 2x4s
- 9 eight-foot 2x4s
- 11 ten-foot 5/4x6 deck boards
- Screws or nails rated for outdoor use with treated wood
I also used a few miscellaneous pieces for trim (e.g. 1x4s or furring strips), plus some outdoor carpet scraps for the lower bunks.
The approximate dimensions are 40 inches wide on the outside, 54 inches tall at the peak of the roof, 48 inches tall at the other side, and ten feet long. Obviously if you build something like this you will want to size it for your specific boats.
A piece of plywood covers the back and adds a great deal
of stability/strength to the structure.

Since the top picture was taken, I added some trim pieces plus an additional 2x4 to each of the front "legs" for reinforcement. I also added some diagonal bracing to the front opening to give it more stability from side to side (picture below). I'm undecided on whether to add a swing out door to the front.
My total cost was under $200, but I had some materials and all fasteners on-hand. It would be closer to $300 if you had to purchase everything. Here's a link to a video with more information about how I built it.
Here you can see where I added an additional 2x4 to each leg,
plus a trim piece to cover the edge of the plywood.

Diagonal bracing, and a curious pup. |
